To qualify for the Veterans Aid and Attendance Improved Pension the following must be met -
- You must need at least one Assistance with Daily Living
- Dressing
- Eating
- Walking
- Medication
- Bathing
- Toileting
- Those with Alzheimer's or dementia may qualify due to the loss of their sense of safety and need for reminding to eat, bath or take their medication.
- Legally blind is automatically qualified
- Must have physicians statement that they require assistance
- Must be paying for care or will be within thirty days of applying. Children assisting their parents can be paid to provide care or moving to an assisted living easily qualifies.
- Monthly medical expenses must exceed monthly income*
- Assets limits are based on life expectancy
* Insurance premiums, co-pays, over the counter medications, supplies and care are included in medical expenses. Contracting with a caregiver or moving to an assisted living can help meet this requirement.
